Definition
Double deduction is two debits for the same vehicle at the same toll plaza within a few minutes, usually because the plaza reader scanned the tag twice. Only one passage happened, so the second debit should be refunded.
What columns does a FASTag statement have?
Statements differ by bank but usually show the transaction date and time, a transaction or reference ID, the toll plaza name or code, the tag ID or vehicle number, the vehicle class charged, the amount, whether it is a debit or credit, and the running wallet balance. Recharges and refunds appear as credits.
- Sort by vehicle, then by date and time, to see each vehicle’s passages in order.
- Keep recharges separate: they are transfers into the wallet, not expenses.
How do I spot a double deduction?
Sort the statement by vehicle and time, then look for two debits at the same plaza within a few minutes of each other with the same or similar amount. A vehicle cannot pass the same plaza twice in two minutes on a normal trip, so the second debit is almost always a reader error to dispute.
What is a vehicle class mismatch?
Each FASTag is linked to a vehicle class, and plazas charge by class. If a car or light vehicle is charged at a bus or truck rate, the class printed on the statement will not match the class of your vehicle. Compare the class on each debit with the registered class and dispute the difference.
How do I raise a FASTag dispute?
Contact the issuer bank through its FASTag customer care or portal with the transaction ID, date, plaza and amount, and say why the charge is wrong: a duplicate, the wrong class, or no trip that day. Keep a record of the dispute and check later statements for the refund credit.
FleetLite imports the statement, matches each toll to a trip, flags duplicates, class mismatches and tolls with no trip, and tracks each dispute until the refund arrives.
How to check a FASTag statement for wrong charges
Download the statement
Download the FASTag statement for the month from the issuer bank’s portal as Excel or CSV.
Separate recharges
Move recharges and refunds aside. Only debits at plazas are tolls.
Sort by vehicle and time
Sort debits by vehicle number or tag ID, then by date and time.
Find duplicates
Mark two debits at the same plaza within a few minutes for the same vehicle.
Check vehicle class
Compare the class on each debit with the vehicle’s registered class and mark any mismatch.
Check against trips
Compare toll dates with your trip records and mark tolls on days the vehicle had no trip.
Raise disputes
Send each marked transaction ID to the issuer bank and record the dispute until the refund shows on the statement.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is a FASTag recharge an expense?
No. It moves money into the FASTag wallet. Only the toll debits are expenses; counting recharges as expenses counts tolls twice.
Can GPS prove a toll was wrong?
GPS shows whether the vehicle passed the plaza at that time. A toll charged when the vehicle was elsewhere is strong grounds for a dispute.
How often should I check?
At least monthly. With statement import and automatic flags, checking takes minutes instead of hours.
